Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Museums Policy.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

340 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht whether the National Museum is still committed to the location of the National Folk Museum in Cork; and if he will ask the National Museum to enter into negotiations with the Southern Health Board with a view to acquiring the Old Grey Building which formed part of Our Lady's Hospital, with a view to locating the Folk Museum there.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 17, 36 and 116 on 7 July 1993, columns 1459-1460 of the Official Report for that day.

A number of options for the future location of a number of the Museum's collections, including the National Folklife Collection, is under consideration in the context of the formulation of an overall National Museum policy.
It is premature to make any commitments regarding the location of particular collections in specific buildings.
