Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Glenamaddy (Galway) School.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

38 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the overcrowding at St. Joseph's Primary School, Glenamaddy, County Galway; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that the school authorities had to rent, at very high rates, a prefabricated room to facilitate the extra children; if all plans and design work for the proposed extension are completed; when the tenders will be sought; and if the building will commence in 1993.

I am aware of the accommodation problems at this school. My Department is currently providing a grant of 50 per cent towards the cost of the rental of the prefabricated classroom but has recently proposed to the school authorities that they purchase the structure. A grant of 85 per cent of the approved purchase price would be payable by my Department should the school authorities agree to proceed as requested.

The architectural planning of the major building project approval in this case has been completed and it is ready to proceed to tender. It will be considered for inclusion in the construction phase of the National Schools' Capital Programme in due course in the light of available resources and other commitments and priorities.
