Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Services for Physically Handicapped.

Pat Upton

Ceist:

361 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health the number of people who suffer from post poliomyelitis syndrome in this country; and if he will give details of the services which his Department provides for these people.

Information on the number of people who suffer from post poliomyelitis syndrome is not available. Health boards and voluntary agencies provide a range of allowances and services for persons with a physical handicap. These include psysiotherapy, occupational therapy, home help, public health nursing, disabled person's maintenance allowances, mobility allowances and motorised transport grants. Handicapped persons who are deemed suitable for employment may have their training fees paid by the local health board. The National Rehabilitation Board co-ordinates vocational rehabilitation services for disabled persons with a view to their placement in employment.

Entitlement to individual services and allowances is determined by individual circumstances and degree of handicap of the person concerned.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

362 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for new community care offices and clinic facilities in Waterford city to service the needs of the people of Waterford City Community Care Area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

367 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if he will state his intentions in relation to the provision of proper and adequate community care offices for the South Eastern Health Board in Waterford city; if he will make financial provision for this facility in the 1994 Government Estimates; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I accept the need for a new community care office and clinic facilities in Waterford city and I am making every effort to secure the necessary capital funding for it in the context of the 1994 Estimates.
