Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Post-Primary School Facilities.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

415 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education her plans for the provision of a transitional year at Maynooth post primary school, County Kildare; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that such a proposal is unlikely unless the necessary funds are made available for extra facilities at the school; if she will confirm the position to the school authorities; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

420 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the extent to which a transitional year will be available in the various post-primary schools throughout the country in 1994; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

421 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if it will be possible for the authorities at Maynooth post-primary school to offer a transitional year to students having particular regard to the urgent need for additional accommodation at the school; if it is anticipated to meet this accommodation need in the 1994 Estimates; if the necessary funding has been identified for the provision of the accommodation; if she has satisfied herself that her Department will be in a position to address the problem at an early date; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 415, 420 and 421 together.

My Department informed post-primary school authorities on 7 July 1993 of the interim arrangements for pupils entering senior cycle in September, 1994. These arrangements include provision for the transition year programme. Material on the curriculum for that programme and the senior certificate programme will be issued to all post-primary schools during this school term.

Schools will then be invited to indicate what senior cycle structure they wish to make available to pupils in the school year 1994-95.

In the case of Maynooth post-primary school it has been agreed with County Kildare Vocational Education Committee to provide an additional seven classrooms, including specialist accommodation, at this school. The planning arrangements for the proposed extension are under discussion with the vocational educational committee at present. On completion of architectural planning the project will be considered for inclusion in the 1994 capital programme, in the light of the resources available and the demands on these resources.
