Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Northern Ireland Agricultural College Grant.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

432 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the situation whereby a person (details supplied) in County Cavan is seeking financial aid with maintenance at the Greenmount Agricultural College in County Antrim but cannot be allowed this because it is an agricultural college; and the reason agricultural colleges in Northern Ireland are not treated the same way as ordinary colleges would be for grant purposes.

I understand from Cavan County Council, which is the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the higher education grants scheme in this case that the person in question did not formally submit a grant application.

Courses in Greenmount Agricultural College, County Antrim are not currently approved for the purposes of the student grants under my Department's student support schemes.

My Department has however received an application from that institution to have its courses approved for that purpose. This application is currently being assessed by my Department and I will keep the Deputy informed of developments.
