Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - In-Service Teacher Training Expenditure.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

454 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the current level of spending by her Department on the in-service training of primary and post-primary teachers; and the amount per teacher.

The In-service provision in 1993 at primary level is £299,000 and at post-primary level, £1,115.000.

The primary inservice provision is being expended on courses on various aspects of the curriculum, courses in Special Education and courses contracted by the Department for training in specific areas e.g. Management Training for Teachers.

In the case of post-primary in-service, the provision is mainly for Junior Certificate in-service courses,Programme for Economic and Social Progress commitments for Management courses, VPTP, VTOS, Youthreach and other designated areas such as the Transition Year and Senior Cycle options.
The details sought by the Deputy in relation to the amount spent on in-service per teacher are not readily available in my Department.
