Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Proposal for Teacher Early Retirement Scheme.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

455 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has to introduce any early retirement scheme for teachers in view of the high stress level in this profession.

The three teacher unions have submitted a joint claim to the Teachers' Conciliation Council seeking that teachers be entitled to retire from teaching service on a pension from 50 years of age on the basis of accrued pension with 10 years enhancement.

The claim is being considered in accordance with the provision of the Teachers' Conciliation and Arbitration Scheme and the Agreement on Pay and Conditions contained in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

As the proceedings of the Teachers' Conciliation Council are confidential it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the possible outcome of such negotiations.
