Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Beaumont (Dublin) School.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

82 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that her Department approved an extension for St. Paul's Special School, Beaumont, Dublin 9 in 1978 and approved a grant in 1985, that the school has spent over £20,000 making up its local contribution on professional fees, that the extension is still not built and that the school has been unable to develop the pre-vocational courses which provide essential skills for children with autism; and if she will now give the go-ahead for this project which will be needed even in the context of a policy favouring greater integration of education for children with a disability.

I am aware that the project which the Deputy referred to was not proceeded with as planned. My Department is in the process of finalising an updated review of the accommodation requirements at this school with a view to deciding what works should be undertaken at this stage on the basis of the most up to date information. I will keep the Deputy informed of developments as soon as a decision is made in the matter.
