Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Travellers' Rights.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

158 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if, in consultation with the Ministers for Finance, Environment, Health, Social Welfare and Education, he will initiate a programme from January 1994 to give traveller families their basic rights in accommodation, education, work and recreation without awaiting the report of the Commission of Travellers.

The Task Force on the Travelling Community held its first meeting on 9 July 1993. Pending receipt of the recommendations of the Task Force. I have emphasised to local authorities that they must proceed with and extend where appropriate the services for travellers for which they are responsible. Government Departments will also be proceeding with the current programme for travellers.

As special actions in favour of the travelling community are being undertaken on an ongoing basis. I do not consider it necessary to embark on the kind of initiative suggested by the Deputy.
