Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Maintenance Costs.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

167 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health if he will impose a prorata payment on the families of those who are receiving the home-help service.

Under section 61 of the Health Act, 1970, health boards may make arrangements to assist in the maintenance at home of persons who, but for the provision of such a service would require to be maintained otherwise than at home. This section empowers, without obliging, health boards to provide support services such as home help, laundry and meals.

Health boards are not limited in the categories of persons they can assist at home and may charge for the service. It is a matter for each health board to decide whether to charge for the service and the amount of any such charge.
