Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Equine Studies.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

185 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that many young people are training for the diploma of assistant instructor of the British Horse Society and the growing concern at the conditions of work that these young people undertake, she will ensure that they are not exploited in riding schools around the country; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Post-leaving certificate courses in equine studies are run in four centres around the country as part of my Department's vocational preparation and training (VPT) programme. In such cases, aspects of the training are delivered in riding schools in close co-operation with the vocational education committees. The VPT programme is subject to standard conditions in terms of programme structure, and my Department provides guidelines to schools on approaches to organising work experience placements.

I have had no complaints of exploitation on these courses. The Deputy can be assured that my Department will investigate fully any complaints of exploitation made in regard to this or any other course operated under its aegis. From inquiries made as a result of the Deputy's question, I understand that complaints were made locally by parents in relation to one centre in Dublin. I further understand that this course is being restructured and is not operating this year.
