Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Silage Quality.

Liam Burke

Ceist:

25 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to any comparative analysis of the quality of silage harvested in 1993 compared to 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Brendan McGahon

Ceist:

57 Mr. McGahon asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to any comparative analysis of the quality of silage harvested in 1993 compared to 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 25 and 57 together.

A recent Teagasc report on winter fodder quality shows that in general first cut silages in 1993 are wetter and have a lower crude protein content and digestibility than normal. The second cut is however, better than in previous years while preservation is not the source of concern that it was in 1992. In general yields are higher in 1993 and supplies of fodder should be adequate over the coming winter.
