Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bovine Tuberculosis Transmission.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

63 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on whether infected badgers can transmit bovine tuberculosis to cattle; if so, if it is proposed to introduce any new measures to deal with the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is now generally acknowledged that infected badgers play a role in the transmission of bovine TB. Research studies in this country have shown that up to 14 per cent of badgers can have TB lesions.

My Department has currently a comprehensive research programme under way in regard to the role of wildlife in the transmission of disease. A major project in County Offaly is nearing completion. A key project is an EC Interreg funded joint feasibility study on the concept of a vaccine for wildlife. Considerable research had been done into the ecology and behaviour of the badger population.

At farm level, badgers can be removed under licence from the Office of Public Works where their involvement in the spread of infection has been identified where breakdown occurs. Herdowners are advised in regard to the appropriate husbandry steps to counter the possibility of future infection including measures to deter the role of wildlife.
