Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ronanstown (Dublin) Development.

Austin Currie

Ceist:

121 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment whether conclusion 4.1.D.1 of the report of the Interdepartmental Group which examined urban crime and disorder in the Ronanstown area of Dublin West, that priority should be given to the completion of the Fonthill Road in order to facilitate industrial and other developments which the area badly needs and to ease the sense of isolation experienced by local residents has been implemented; if not, when it will be; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the period 1990 to 1992, special road grants amounting to £1.285 million were provided towards the cost of work on sections of the Fonthill-Newlands Road. A further provision has been made in this year's allocations, including £75,000 for public lighting on Fonthill Road.

The sections of the road which remain to be provided are between Neilstown and Nangor Road and between Boot Road and the Naas Road. Proposals were received in my Department from Dublin County Council on 18 October last for the appointment of consultants for the detailed design of the Neilstown to Nangor Road section; these are at present under examination. A compulsory purchase order has been prepared by the county council for the acquisition of land for the construction of a new road from Boot Road to the Naas Road-New Road junction. A public local inquiry has been held into objections made against confirmation of the order and I will determine the matter as soon as possible.

The question of providing special road grants towards the cost of the remaining road works will be considered in the context of the determination of the road grant allocations for future years.
