Ceist:

126 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment if it is proposed to introduce legislation to abolish service charges in all local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

127 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment the total revenue from service charges in each year since 1984 to date in respect of each local authority.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 125, 126 and 127 together.

I have notified local authorities of their rate support grant allocations for the coming year. Each authority's allocation has been increased by 2.5 per cent.

Each local authority may decide, in its absolute discretion, whether charges for services in its area are to be levied or not, and the scale of any such charge. Amendment of the relevant legislation to remove this discretion is not proposed.

Information on the total revenue from service charges since 1984 in respect of each local authority is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy.
