Vol. 435 No. 11

Written Answers. - Ethnic Links Between Iceland and Ireland.

Godfrey Timmins

Ceist:

36 Mr. Timmins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the steps, if any, that are being taken to strengthen the strong ethnic links which exist between Iceland and Ireland.

I am conscious of the many historical links which exist between Ireland and Iceland and I am well-disposed towards moves to strengthen relations. I welcome, in particular, the increase in recent years in visitors between the two countries.

Ireland had the honour to receive the President of Iceland on a State Visit in 1991. I know the Deputy will share my view on the symbolic values of such visits in celebrating and reinforcing ties of history and culture.

Last month Dublin Tourism organised a very successful promotion in Reykjavik which included Irish musicians, dancers and mime artists. A translation of Joyce'sUlysses, undertaken by a noted Icelandic writer, is, I understand, about to be launched.
The Icelandic Embassy in London has been exploring with us the possibilities of increasing cultural exchanges. I understand that we are currently waiting for a specific proposal in this area and I can assure the Deputy that it will receive every sympathetic consideration.
