Vol. 435 No. 11

Written Answers. - Nationality and Citizenship Act.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

59 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will ensure an urgent follow up to the commitment given by the Minister of State at his Department that pressure will be put on the Department of Justice to amend the Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1986, to allow registration of many thousands of Irish people overseas who wish to register as Irish citizens.

I am personally very much aware of this problem and conscious of the urgency of resolving it. As he promised the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs during the debate on 11 November on the Diplomatic and Consular Officers (Provision of Services) Bill, 1993, the Minister of State Deputy T. Kitt has written to the Minister for Justice on the matter.
