Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Lighting System.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

164 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Environment the reason finance has not been sanctioned for the extension of the public lighting system in Bantry, County Cork, from opposite Bantry House car-park along the national secondary route to the West Lodge Hotel, where fatal accidents have occurred on the outskirts of the town.

In October 1992, Cork County Council submitted proposals to my Department to extend public lighting on national secondary road N71 in Bantry between the Abbey Burial Ground and the West Lodge Hotel. The accident statistics for the period 1988-1992 show that only one minor accident occurred during the hours of darkness on the section of road in question. For this reason, and due to competing demands for funding for other schemes, the proposal is not regarded as a priority one and the council have been informed accordingly.
