Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mullingar (Westmeath) Psychiatric Hospital.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

210 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health the number of patients from St. Loman's Hospital, Mullingar, County Westmeath, who have been relocated to community houses in County Westmeath; and the nursing job losses arising from these relocations.

The Midland Health Board has responsibility for the provision of services in the catchment area of the psychiatric hospital in question. The board has indicated that a total of 81 patients from the hospital have been relocated to hostels in the community in County Westmeath and that there have been no nursing job losses as a result of these relocations.

Ceist:

211 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health the number of patients from St. Loman's Hospital, Mullingar, County Westmeath, who have been relocated to Longford; the dates of the relocations in each of the past five years respectively; and the number of jobs lost at St. Loman's as a result of these relocations.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

212 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health the number of patients and staff in each category at St. Loman's Hospital, Mullingar, County Westmeath, at 30 September in each of the years from 1984 to 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 211 and 212 together.

The Midland Health Board which has responsibility for the provision of both inpatient and community based psychiatric services in St. Loman's Psychiatric Hospital catchment area has furnised the data that the Deputy has sought. This is set out in the following tabular statements.

In line with the policy set out in the report of the study group on the development of the psychiatric servicesPlanning for the Future, patients have been discharged from St. Loman's Psychiatric Hospital to community and other more appropriate settings. This has enabled the board to rationalise the use of facilities and employment of staff in St. Loman's Hospital. As part of this process, the facilities at the hospital dedicated to mental handicap have, since 1989, been de-designated and are now formally separate from the psychiatic hospitals. This has allowed persons with mental handicap without significant psychiatric disturbance to be more appropriately cared for by the mental handicap services. These patients and the psychiatric nursing and other staff providing services in this unit have not been counted in the figures provided in the table for 1989 and subsequent years. Some 63.5 staff provide services to these patients. The data furnished by the board should be read in this light.
