Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) Treatment Plant.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

27 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment if provision has been made in the National Development Plan 1994-1999 for a sewerage treatment plant for Drogheda, County Louth; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the River Boyne is now highly polluted with raw sewerage, not alone from Drogheda but from other towns in other counties; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that Drogheda Corporation has completed the interceptor sewer systems in anticipation of approval and finance being provided for the promised treatment plant; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Stage 1 of the Drogheda Main Drainage Scheme relating to design and planning work, which has an estimated cost of some £1.7 million, has recently been approved for assistance under the Cohesion Fund. Stage 2 of the scheme, involving the construction of interceptor sewers, pumping stations, a secondary treatment plant and associated works is being examined at present in the context of the post-1993 Operational Programme for Environmental Services.
