Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Mayo Traffic Diversion.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

45 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a petition from the residents of Claremorris, County Mayo, objecting to a proposal to divert traffic from the proposed N17 by-pass of Claremorris into Claremorris town by way of a newly constructed road linking directly onto the existing Knock/Claremorris Road and thence to the Convent/Balla Road, Claremorris, via the existing new link road serving the new Claremorris Boys' National School; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have received a petition from residents of Claremorris conveying general support for the proposed N17 by-pass of the town but indicating concern about the provision of a link road to replace the existing N60 through the town. The overall aim of the by-pass proposal is to relieve the town of through traffic using the N17 national primary route and the N60 national secondary route.

The planning and development of road improvement projects on national roads is a matter, in the first instance, for the relevant local authority. In the circumstances, persons concerned about aspects of the Claremorris proposal should make their views known to Mayo County Council which is preparing plans for the by-pass.
