Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - World Court Project.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

73 Mr. Molloy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he supports the World Court Project currently before the United Nations General Assembly; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A resolution which sought to ask the International Court of Justice to provide an advisory opinion on whether the threat or use of nuclear weapons in any circumstances was permitted under international law was tabled by Indonesia, on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, at the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on 4 November 1993. However, on 19 November, Indonesia stated that it would not be seeking any action on the resolution.

Ireland's opposition to nuclear weapons is of long standing and well known. Successive Governments have made clear our policy of seeking the complete elimination of all nuclear weapons and the conclusion of a comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty.
