Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tourist VAT Refund.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

99 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the amount of VAT refunded to tourists who make purchases in the country while on holiday for each year since the scheme was introduced; the percentage of this money which was actually paid to agents acting for the tourists; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The relief from VAT on purchases made in the State by tourists from outside the European Community is operated directly by the retailer concerned or by a specialised private refund agency acting on the retailer's behalf. VAT returns are not completed in a manner which would enable the figures requested by the Deputy to be calculated.
