Vol. 437 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Clare Schools.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

115 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education if she will approve the provision of an additional classroom and toilet facilities at Crusheen National School, County Clare.

A request for a grant towards the cost of providing an additional classroom has been received and is being considered in my Department. A decision will be conveyed to the school authorities as soon as possible.

Ceist:

116 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education if she will recognise the current enrolment policy of Barefield National School, County Clare; and if she will sanction the appointment of an extra assistant teacher from 10 January 1994, on that basis.

Enrolment at Barefield national school on 30 September 1992 had risen to 201 pupils. On the basis of this enrolment, an additional teaching post was sought by the school. However, this figure included 18 pupils enrolled in a seventh standard following a post-primary programme.

It has been stated on behalf of the school that a seventh standard has traditionally been conducted there. Seventh standards following a secondary school programme were common in the days before the universal provision of post-primary education. With the provision of such education from 1967, it is now no longer appropriate that general post-primary education be provided through national schools.

It has been represented that there is a shortage of post-primary places in the area. My Department is having this matter investigated and, meantime, has informed the school that an additional post has been approved on a temporary basis.
