Vol. 437 No. 4

Written Answers. - Third Level Capital Grants.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

188 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the total estimated capital expenditure grants in the National Development Plan, 1994-1999, for third level institutions; if she will give a list of the applications for funding as submitted to her, with the amount sought by each university/institution; when it is expected that decisions will be made known; and the funding that is being made available to Dublin City University.

A sum of £120 million has been included in the National Development Plan in respect of improved and developed facilities at third level.

Proposals for the funding of a broad range of capital projects were received by my Department from virtually all third level institutions. The position with regard to proposals from individual institutions is that my Department is at present in the process of identifying and prioritising the various projects for inclusion in the European Regional Development Fund operational programme.
The Deputy will appreciate that this process is extremely difficult due to the very large number of applications received from the institutions and involving an estimated £1 billion in expenditure. Nevertheless, I expect to be in a position to shortly finalise and announce the third level capital component of the operational programme. It is therefore not yet possible to indicate the level of funding that may be made available to DCU.
