Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driver Testers.

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

141 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Finance the reason there is an upper age limit of 50 years of age for eligibility for driver testers.

Avril Doyle

Ceist:

142 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Finance the reasons for the upper and lower age restrictions on driver tester job applicants.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 141 and 142 together. In the Programme for Economic and Social Progress a commitment was given by the Government to raise recruitment age limits in the public service. Previous competitions for appointment to the grade of driver tester were advertised with an upper age limit of 45. This limit was increased to 50 for the most recent competition reflecting the Government's commitment in this regard.

The lower age limit of 27 was set having regard to the general requirements for appointment as driver tester, including qualifications and experience and were determined following consultation with the Department of the Environment.
The application of age limits for open competitions is reviewed on an ongoing basis in the light of the experience of each competition.
