Vol. 439 No. 1

Written Answers. - THORP Reprocessing Plant.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

15 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he has in the last three weeks received any communication from his British counterpart in respect of the plant at THORP.

I have recently received a letter from Mr. John Gummer, MP, British Secretary of State for the Environment regarding the decision taken jointly with the British Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to grant the discharge authorisations necessary for the go-ahead of THORP. That letter asserts that the decision was arrived at following long and detailed study of all the points raised in the consultation process and repeats the British view that all national and international obligations have been met.

I would like to reassure the Deputy that notwithstanding this latest communication the Government remains opposed to operations at Sellafield and the THORP plant in particular.
