Vol. 439 No. 1

Written Answers. - Appointment to Judiciary.

John Bruton

Ceist:

36 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the action, if any, she intends to take in relation to the recommendation of the Fair Trade Commission to allow the appointment of solicitors as judges.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the Fair Trade Commission recommendation that consideration should be given to the possibility of appointing solicitors as judges in the higher courts. Solicitors are eligible for appointment as judges of the District Court. I will consider the recommendation of the Fair Trade Commission in the context of proposed legislation to amend the Courts Acts, which is being prepared in my Department.
