Vol. 439 No. 3

Written Answers. - Military Property Disposal.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

85 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Defence the progress to date regarding implementation of the programme of disposal of Defence Forces property; if there is any change of policy since the review was first mooted; if any Defence Forces property in Cork was included in any review; the present status of such property in Cork and County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is an ongoing programme for the disposal of surplus military property. Where there is no State requirement, any military property which is surplus to requirements is offered for sale on the open market.

A total of 46 such properties has been sold since 1 January 1989. Five properties are currently in the process of sale and a further 16 properties have been identified for disposal. In addition, 204 married quarters located outside of barracks have been sold since 1 January 1989. Thirteen quarters are currently in the process of sale and offers for sale in respect of a further 12 quarters will be made to the occupants shortly.

The position with regard to the sale of surplus military properties in Cork and County Cork was outlined in my replies to Question No. 99 on 7 October 1992 and Nos. 13 and 150 on 6 April 1993. With the exception of a small site at Curtainswell, Fort Davis, County Cork no additional properties in Cork are currently proposed for disposal.
