Vol. 439 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Psychologist Service.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

141 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the resources and staffing levels devoted to the school psychologist service on the northside of Dublin; the extra resources, if any, to be provided in the current year; and if she will improve the service in the Finglas-Ballymun area due to the number of children with difficulties there.

At present there are four psychologists serving post primary schools in the North Dublin area.

There is a commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government to extend the psychological service to all primary schools. In line with this commitment, I have announced my intention to begin extending the service during the current year based on the experience of the pilot project for the development of a psychological service to primary schools which operated in two areas, West Tallaght-Clondalkin and South Tipperary. In arranging for this extension the particular needs of other areas will be borne in mind.

The areas to which the service will be extended have not yet been finalised.
