Vol. 440 No. 1

Written Answers. - Substance Abuse Educational Measures.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

167 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the health education programmes available regarding the dangers of substance abuse; where such programmes are promoted; if they are available to community groups; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has in place a range of educational measures which are designed to combat the problems of substance abuse. The health promotion unit of my Department has developed and supplies a wide range of literature and videos on the topic for particular target audiences.

The unit has also been involved in the development and implementation of allied training programmes. These are also directed at specific audiences and include: drug questions local answers (DQLA); parenting programmes; drink awareness for youth; (DAY) and substance abuse prevention programme for schools.

I have asked my Department to write to the Deputy giving detailed information on these various initiatives.
