Ceist:

91 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Defence the number and location of posts and barracks occupied by the Defence Forces excluding those occupied by the FCA and Slua Muirí units; the posts that have been demanned since 1 January 1993; the posts that have been occupied by the Defence Forces since 1 January 1992; and if he will make a statement on his policy regarding the future vacating of military posts.

There are 28 barracks and posts occupied by members of the Permanent Defence Force. They are as follows:

Eastern Command

(1) Collins Barracks, Dublin; (2) Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin; (3) Clancy Barracks, Dublin; (4) McKee Barracks, Dublin; (5) Gormanston Camp, County Meath; (6) Aiken Barracks, Dundalk, County Louth; (7) Military Post, Castleblayney, County Monaghan; (8) Monaghan Barracks, County Monaghan; (9) O'Neill Barracks, County Cavan; (10) St. Bricins Hospital, Dublin and (11) Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, County Dublin.

Western Command

(1) Connolly Barracks, Longford; (2) Custume Barracks, Athlone, County Westmeath; (3) Columb Barracks, Mullingar, County Westmeath; (4) Dun Ui Mhaoiliosa, Galway; (5) Finner Camp, County Donegal; (6) Rochill House, Letterkenny, County Donegal and (7) Lifford Military Post, County Donegal.

Southern Command

(1) Collins Barracks, Cork; (2) Murphy Barracks, Ballincollig, County Cork; (3) Fitzgerald Camp, Fermoy, County Cork; (4) Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick; (5) Kickham Baracks, Clonmel, County Tipperary; (6) Naval Base and Dockyard, Haulbowline, County Cork.
Curragh Command
(1) Curragh Camp, County Kildare which includes the following barracks: Pearse Barracks; Ceannt Barracks; Clarke Barracks; Connolly Barracks; McDonagh Barracks; McDermott Barracks; Plunkett Barracks. (2) McGee Barracks, Kildare, County Kildare; (3) Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare; (4) Stephens Barracks, Kilkenny.
No post has been vacated by the Defence Forces since 1 January 1993. No new post has been occupied by the Defence Forces since 1 January 1992.
The Government has no plans regarding the vacation of any barracks or post, other than Collins Barracks, Dublin, at this time. This matter is, however, kept under continual review taking account of,inter alia, the strategic spread of existing barracks and posts and the necessity to maintain security and operational efficiency.
