Vol. 442 No. 2

Written Answers. - Attacks on Motorists.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

95 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will request the Garda to deal with the problem of youths congregating at road junctions along Seville Place, Dublin 1, and attacking motorists in view of the fact that residents complained that there is no visible Garda presence in the area and the problem is becoming extremely serious.

The Garda authorities are aware of crimes being committed against motorists in Seville Place, Dublin 1. They are taking special measures in the area to combat this type of crime. These measures include the operation of special additional mobile patrols, particularly at the times of greatest risk, and the targeting of those persons suspected of being involved in this type of crime. The Divisional Task Force together with dog patrols are available as back up if considered necessary.

The Garda authorities are confident that these measures, along with the increased powers now available to gardaí under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 to deal with this type of situation, will lead to an improvement in the level of crime in the vicinity of Seville Place.
