Vol. 442 No. 4

Written Answers. - Army Promotional Prospects.

Avril Doyle

Ceist:

21 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Defence with reference to Parliamentary Question No. 20 of 13 April 1994, the percentage of Defence Forces personnel who received any level of promotional advancement during 1993; and his views on whether a lack of promotional prospects will result in the Army being seen as a job rather than a career.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

28 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Defence with reference to parliamentary Question No. 20 of 13 April 1994, the percentage of Defence Forces personnel who received any level of promotional advancement during 1993; and his views on whether a lack of promotional prospects will result in the Army being seen as a job rather than a career.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 21 and 28 together.

During 1993 almost 3 per cent of personnel of the Permanent Defence Force were promoted. In recent years there has been a marked decline in the number of personnel leaving the Permanent Defence Force and this in turn has led to a reduction in the number of promotional outlets. As the House will be aware, a fundamental review of the structure and organisation of the Defence Forces is at present under way.
