Vol. 442 No. 4

Written Answers. - Howth (Dublin) Fish Auction Hall.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

44 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Marine the cost to his Department and the total cost of the new fish auction hall at Howth, County Dublin; when this hall was built; the reason it has not opened; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The new fish auction hall at Howth cost about £480,000 of which 50 per cent was grant aided by the European Union. The building was completed in June, 1993 and the office accommodation has been occupied since then.

Auctioning of fish is expected to commence shortly following completion of negotiations between the Department, the company which will manage the auction hall and Howth Fishermen's Association. The negotiations were somewhat protracted but it was essential for the success of the auctions and the benefit of the fishing industry in general to secure the agreement of all parties prior to commencement of auctions.
