Vol. 442 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dollymount (Dublin) Timber Bridge.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

82 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine if he has satisfied himself that the condition of the timber bridge to the north wall at Dollymount, Dublin 3, is in sound structural condition and safe for use by motorists and pedestrians; if he has further satisfied himself that the conditions for use of the bridge are strictly adhered to; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While I have no direct responsibility in this matter, I am advised by Dublin Port and Docks Board that the bridge in question was examined in detail approximately two years ago and was found then to be suitable for the traffic designated — that is pedestrians and vehicles weighing less than two tonnes. This weight restriction was introduced within the last three years — the limit prior to that was five tonnes.

Currently the board's engineering department spends in excess of £10,000 annually on the upkeep of the bridge. Every effort is being made by Dublin Port and Docks Board to ensure that the weight restrictions are adhered to.
