192 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to concerns that an independent review of the situation in St. Michael's House, Finglas, Dublin 11, promised in 1993, has not taken place with a view to providing for assessment only rather than assessment and detention as is currently the practice.

I am not aware of the promise to which the Deputy refers. The facility in question is certified as a place of detention under the Children Act, 1908, and as such is required under that Act to accept referrals from the courts on remand for assessment and on remand only.

If the Deputy wishes to provide me with more details of the promise to which he refers, I will have the matter investigated further.
