Vol. 442 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Visits by Inspectors.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

205 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the number of schools visited for the last year for which statistics are available for each inspector in the second level inspectorate team.

There are no statistics available at present on the number of schools visited by each post primary inspector in any particular year. In the year 1992-93 the inspectors made a total of 769 schools visits. This included schools which were visited by more than one inspector. About half of these visits involved subject inspection which included looking at the work of about 1,300 teachers. In other cases the overall work of the schools was inspected and some visits were in response to requests for assistance.

Oral, aural and practical examinations and projects accounted for 127 visits. Other visits related to educational research and development, gathering data for the Department and dealing with arrangements for pupils with special needs. Because of their heavy and increasing involvement in examination work it was not possible for inspectors to spend as much time in schools as I would like. However, new mechanisms were put in place during the current school year for streamlining the production of examination papers, which should have the effect of freeing the inspectors to spend more time in schools.
