Vol. 443 No. 2

Written Answers. - Conflict in Rwanda.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

37 Mr. Bradford asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has received correspondence concerning the present situation in Rwanda from a person (details supplied) in County Cork; and his response to this correspondence.

The appalling scenes from Rwanda and the plight of refugees fleeing the carnage in the country have horrified the Irish people. As a clear expression of their horror, many hundreds of people have written to me to express their deep concern at the situation. I have received the correspondence referred to and will reply to it, and the other correspondence, in detail as soon as possible.

The reaction of the Government to the conflict in Rwanda and the steps it has taken to promote a resolution at international level were set out in a reply to a parliamentary question yesterday.

I have decided that the Minister of State in my Department, Deputy Tom Kitt, will visit the region as soon as possible in order to assess at first hand the political situation and the urgent humanitarian needs which have arisen as a result of the conflict in Rwanda.
