Vol. 443 No. 2

Written Answers. - IVF Facilities.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

87 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the practice of restricting IVF facilities to married couples; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In-vitro fertilisation — IVF — is available at the Human Assisted Reproduction Unit at the Rotunda Hospital and at an assisted conception unit at University College Hospital, Galway. I understand the practice at these units has been to treat married couples only. In-vitro fertilisation is governed by guidelines issued by the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and approved by the Medical Council.
