Vol. 443 No. 2

Written Answers. - Clerical Assistant Vacancy.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

90 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education the criteria for the position of temporary clerical assistant in her Department's examinations branch at Athlone, County Westmeath; if there are any exceptions to the rules governing the intake of applicants; and the number of vacancies to be filled this year.

The criteria used for the recruitment of temporary clerical assistants is as follows: Positions are filled by means of competitive interview and applicants must (1) be registered with FÁS; (2) have a minimum educational standard of junior-intermediate certificate; (3) have no near relatives sitting any of the State examinations in that year.

It is desirable that applicants have good keyboard skills.

Priority is given to applicants who are on the live register of unemployed people, maintained by the Department of Social Welfare, or who are on a FÁS course. Applicants must accordingly have their application forms certified by either the Department of Social Welfare or FÁS if appropriate.

In the interests of equity these criteria are followed in considering all applications.

I envisage that between 50 and 60 people will be employed as temporary clerical assistants in 1994.
