Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Traffic Control Measures.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

151 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the danger to pupils attending the Ashbourne all-Irish school, County Meath, due to the Deerpark junction traffic problems and the fact that this danger will be exacerbated in September 1994, with the opening of the Ashbourne post-primary school at the same junction; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that Meath County Council and the Department of the Environment are awaiting a £20,000 allocation from her Department to provide the additional traffic lane and traffic lights and that this awaited funding is part of the planning permission section 84 conditions; and when this money will be paid by her Department so that work can commence immediately in order for the lights to be in operation for September 1994.

As required by section 84 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, my Department had lengthy consultations with Meath County Council regarding the plans for the new schools in Ashbourne. During these consultations and at all stages of planning careful attention was paid to pupil safety in the context of safety. However, the funding of traffic control measures and road improvements outside the school site is a matter for the county council. Accordingly my Department has not agreed to contribute the £20,000 requested in respect of the works which are considered to be the responsibility of the county council.
