Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Primary School Teacher Appointment.

Andrew Boylan

Ceist:

154 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education if she will ensure that an eleventh teacher is sanctioned for St. Michaels Junior/Senior schools, Coote-hill, County Cavan in the next school year; and if there will be an even distribution of children among the teachers provided.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. In the case of St. Michael's junior national school there were 153 pupils enrolled on 30 September, 1993, which warrants a staff of principal plus 4 assistants for the 1993-94 school year. That school also has the services of a remedial teacher on a shared basis and a teacher in charge of a special class.

In the case of St. Michael's senior national school there were 159 pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September, 1993, which warrants a staff of principal plus 4 assistants for the 1994-95 school year. That school also has the service of a remedial teacher on a shared basis.

My Department has sanctioned the appointment of a temporary teacher to St. Michael's Senior NS for the 1994-95 school year, following representations made by the Board of Management.

The distribution of classes in both schools is a matter for the principal teachers.
