Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cost of Court Appearances.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

61 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice the number of court appearances made to date by a person (details supplied); the number of personnel involved in respect of journeys conveying the person to and from the appearances; the the total cost of the appearances; the proposals, if any, she has to change the legislation covering the places in which similar court appearances are held; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The number of court appearances made to date by the person in question is seven. It is not the normal practice to provide details concerning the number of gardaí engaged in particular security operations. The total cost of these appearances, including court costs, is estimated to be in the region of £2,000. This figure does not include normal Garda pay, but includes the cost of overtime, subsistence allowance and petrol.

With regard to the question of changes of existing legislation, any legislative proposals I may bring forward to deal with the matter raised by the Deputy will be announced in the normal way in due course when they have been considered and approved by the Government.
