73 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment whether consideration has been given to seeking a higher turnout in elections either by adopting the Belgian system or otherwise; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Voting is compulsory at elections in Belgium and some other European countries. I do not consider that such a requirement would be acceptable here and I have no proposals to introduce it.
