Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Bathing Waters.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

74 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the quality of bathing waters in the Dublin area; the proposals, if any, he has to extend, improve and further enhance bathing water locations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

, (Wexford): The 1993 European Commission Report on the Quality of Bathing Water shows that all beaches in the Dublin area, other than Dollymount and Burrow Beach, Sutton, complied with the mandatory values contained in the EU Bathing Water Directive. The report noted, however, that water quality in this region should improve over the next few years with the improvements of sewage treatment proposed for Dublin. Planning of these major schemes is proceeding with co-financing from the Cohesion Fund.

Local authorities were requested in July 1993 to review the scope for extending the application of the Bathing Water Directive. In the light of the responses, I have made regulations which apply the national standards for bathing waters and other requirements to 22 additional areas for the 1994 bathing season. No additional beaches were proposed by the Dublin authorities.
