Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Implementation of Road Traffic Legislation.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

76 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment when he intends to commence the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Act, 1994; and if these provisions will effectively bring to an end three endorsements relating to offences in the years 1978 and 1979 on the current driving licence of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3.

I propose to commence the provisions of the Road Traffic Act, 1994 on a phased basis and a first commencement order will be made in the near future.

The provisions of the Act relating to the duration of the period of endorsement will not effect a reduction in the period (three years ending in August 1995) during which the three endorsements referred to will remain on the driving licence of the person in question.
I am informed by the licensing authority, Dublin Corporation, that a further eight convictions for road traffic offences will also require endorsement on the licence; the three-year period in relation to these further convictions will only commence when the person surrenders his licence to the Court for this purpose.
