Vol. 444 No. 5

Written Answers. - Television Reception Quality.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

127 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will request RTE to give proper service to television viewers living in such areas as Derrymore, Drummin and Westport, County Mayo, in view of the fact that some viewers in that region have no Network 2 and poor RTE 1 reception.

I am aware of the difficulties with television reception which have been experienced in the areas concerned.

RTE reports that a new UHF transposer station was installed in Westport in December 1993 and that any significant problems with reception of its television services in the Westport area should now be solved.

RTE is engaged in an ongoing programme of work in relation to other areas, including those mentioned by the Deputy, where, principally due to terrain difficulties, reception of RTE television services is poor. The organisation of this programme depends on, among other factors, the number of households involved, the technical considerations and the costs of the measures required.
