Vol. 444 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin School Grant.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

140 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that her Department only provides a £7,000 grant for the Presentation School, Terenure, Dublin 6, to employ a caretaker (details supplied); the plans, if any, she has to increase this grant; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Under the terms of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress a phased programme of financial assistance by way of a supplementary capitation grant for the provision of caretaking and clerical services in schools was introduced from 1 September 1992. In the case of a school like the one referred to by the Deputy, the current terms of the scheme provide for assistance at a rate of £15 per pupil to a maximum of 500 pupils — i.e. £7,500. The programme is under review at present and I expect that any refinements to the scheme will take effect from September 1994. My Department will notify the schools concerned of any changes in the amount of grant assistance arising from this review.
