Ceist:

Wallace asked the Minister for Social Welfare the present plans in relation to the Social Welfare office at Navan, County Meath, and the protection of the existing employees' jobs after the retirement of the supervisor and the subsequent change of premises from that owned by the present supervisor.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

43 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he intends establishing a parent Social Welfare office in Navan, County Meath, following the retirement this year of the supervisor and the subsequent required relocation of the premises from that owned by the present supervisor.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 42 and 43 together.

My Department is currently providing a service for the unemployed in the Navan area through the agency of a social welfare branch office. Offices of this kind are run by private individuals who are contracted by my Department to provide a limited range of services.

The present branch manager has advised me that she intends to retire next September. She has provided an excellent service over the years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her dedication and to wish her well in her retirement.

Managers of branch offices are employed on a contract basis. The staff of the offices are directly employed by the branch managers who are required to engage the necessary clerical assistance to enable them to deal efficiently with the work of the office.

When my Department is notified of a branch manager's intention to retire, the normal practice is to review the situation in the relevant area. My prime concern is the range and quality of service provided to customers of my Department. Such a review is currently taking place in relation to Navan and I can assure the Deputy that her representations will be taken into account in that review.
